National Philharmonic Winds Up Spanish Tour

The orchestra played in Girona on January 22, Barcelona on January 23, Alicante on January 24 and Murcia on January 25.
 
On the programme were Debussy?s Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra, with the soloist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Liszt?s Les Préludes, Kodály?s Dances of Galánta, Dukas?s The Sorcerer?s Apprentice, and Ravel?s Le Tombeau de Couperin and Bolero. The orchestra performed under the baton of Zoltán Kocsis.
 
Orchestra director Géza Kovács said José Maria Pratt and office, who have organised tours for the orchestra for years, warned that the number of concert-goers in Spain had dropped sharply because of the crisis, and Spaniards were only buying tickets for the highest-quality performances.
 
?All of our concerts were played to full houses, and encores were demanded at each concert. We returned home agreeing to make our next tour in Spain in 2014,? he added.
 
The orchestra recently learnt its work on the ninth album of the Bartók New Series was picked to compete for best orchestral recording in the 2012 BBC Music Magazine Awards. The recording was one of 21 chosen by a jury from some 300 new albums.
 
Fans of the orchestra can vote for the recording at www.classical-music.com/awards2012 until February 29.
 
The Bartók New Series was launched in 2009 for the 125th anniversary of the composer?s birth. The violinist Barnabás Kelemen is the soloist on the ninth album.
