Jordán told a meeting of the Budapest Municipal Council on Thursday evening that he would not renew his contract with the National Theatre, which expires on December 31.
"I would gladly leave behind everything and pursue my ambition to establish a theatre in Szombathely," Jordán said, adding, "I have finished this work and want to leave with a straight head ... but the new task is so exciting that I must not miss it ... it would crown my entire career."
Jordán gave the council his assurances that everything was in order at the National Theatre. The company is good, the performances are good and the audiences are good, he said.
Jordán's theatre in Szombathely would open its first production in December 2008. It would have a troupe of 18 actors.
"I would like to sign contracts with members who have the highest professional credentials, but it is just as important that they reside in Szombathely," Jordán said, recalling that one of the reasons for the success of the Kaposvár theatre, which he directed earlier, was that all of the troupe's members came from Kaposvár.
The theatre in Szombathely could work out of the city's cultural centre for a time, but a new building would have to be constructed soon, Jordán said.
The local council of Szombathely has approved a plan from 1991 to build a new theatre. Details of the plan will be worked out with Jordán and the final draft will be decided on in May.
