Since the summer of 2005, PANKKK has introduced a radical new approach to Hungarian cultural policy as it is the first government initiative that aims to improve Hungary's non-classical music scene. PANKKK's main mission is to create a viable environment for high-quality music from the amateur to the professional level. The programme covers all fields of non-classical music, including jazz, folk music, world music, pop, rock and other genres.
"Although the programme budget for 2009 is smaller than in earlier years, the fact that the programme is ongoing shows the culture ministry's commitment to supporting popular music as a worthy art," said PANKKK director András Berta.
Some HUF 65 million is being made available to support concerts in Hungarian cities and towns other than the capital, HUF 10 million will go toward helping artists bring their debut album to market, and HUF 10 million will be used to support the organisation of talent contests. The deadline for applying in the latest tenders is June 22.
Applicants for the support for concerts must host at least one musical act a month or a minimum of nine between September 1, 2009 and May 22, 2010. Concert organisers and clubs may apply for between HUF 500,000 and HUF 4 million in support.
Applicants for support for debut releases may be made by musicians or publishers. The debut must be at least 40 minutes in length and can be distributed both in physical form and in digital form online. The release of the album must fall between June 1, 2009 and April 30, 2010. Applicants may apply for between HUF 300,000 and HUF 400,000.
