The piece, written by Evan Rail, touches on the Hungarian Design Market (WAMP), a regular design showcase and fair in one of the capital's central squares; The Room, an international fashion and arts magazine published in English and Hungarian; and hot new Hungarian designers, such as clothing label Nanushka and the home furnishings brand Ivanka.
"Although cultured travelers have long had many reasons to visit Budapest - outstanding wine, glorious music, hip night life -- it is probably safe to say the local sense of style was not among them. And yet the city has an emerging design scene unlike almost anything I've found in the former Eastern bloc," Rail writes. "It might not be Copenhagen or even Vienna, but clearly something stylish is happening."
Rail writes about visits to Fregoli, a shop that carries work by designers such as Instant Hungary, which embosses communist-era shop logos on shirts and bags; Retrock and Retrock Deluxe, which carry both street wear and younger styles as well as upscale clothing by Nanushka; and the Pazicski Showroom, which represents only the shoe designer Reka Vago, Souffle jewellery and women's fashions by Miklós Pazicski.
