Norway, as a member of the European Economic Area but not a member of the European Union, earlier decided to make funding available to all of the new European Union member states.
The contract on the funding was signed on Friday by Norwegian ambassador to Hungary Siri Ellen Sletner who noted that more than EUR 135 million had so far been paid out from the Norwegian fund to support projects in Hungary, mainly ones involving the preservation of cultural heritage.
A part of the monies will go toward renovating the royal waiting room at the local train station, said local council spokesman Csaba Péterfi. The highly decorated room built in the 1800s has fallen into a dilapidated state and will require a full restoration from top to bottom, he added.
It is hoped the restored room will be an attraction for visitors to the city.
The funding will also support the rehabilitation of the park next to the waiting room and the renovation of the Grassalkovich summer house.
