The critic Ilma Rakusa wrote that Végel ?belongs with his 71 years to the most astute observers of political transformations and catastrophes in Central Eastern Europe?.

?László Végel is a cosmopolitan Central European who never wanted to be resigned to provincial confinement and political fanaticism,? she added

A year spent by Végel, who has written a number of novels as ?critical outsider?, in Berlin, at the invitation of the German Academic Exchange Service, ?changed his focus?, Rakusa said.

?Végel became an enthusiastic metropolitan flaneur ? and also an explorer of German country.?

He has since received many invitations to readings and scholarships.

Végel?s book of essays, recently translated into German, is called Atonement ? Writings While Travelling. But this is no collection of ?globalised? reports, the critic said.

?Végel travels with the baggage of his past and acculturation, with a sharp eye for European distortions and post-Yugoslavian absurdities,? she said.

?Végel belongs to those people without illusions who turn harsh facts into satire; his humour and severity cannot be separated,? she added, while noting that his intellectual and artistic work is at once accessible and productive.
