The Hungarian historian Gábor Endrődy, who is Hungary's former ambassador to Germany and its current ambassador to the Vatican, recalled Batthyány's life at the occasion, noting his efforts to give greater power to Hungary's peasants, organise an army and create a state budget. Batthyány was executed on October 6, 1849 for his role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849.

Throughout his career, Batthyány exhibited patriotism and a clear commitment to his country. At the same time, he showed a willingness to compromise on international matters, though always standing his moral ground, Endrődy said.
