 Andrea Rost

The Hungarian Andrea Rost is singing Desdemona in Othello opposite the Russian tenor Vladimir Galouzine as Jago, said Ádám Fischer at a press conference presenting the next season. The Georgian baritone Lado Ataneli was a sensation at this year?s Mayfest, he added.

Musical director Balázs Kovalik said the opera could only add to its number of performances at a high artistic cost to the repertoire. Thus the company is ?trying to turn around its assets?, giving some performances a rest and giving others a fresh look.

There are 316 performances ?crammed into? 225 days in the 2010/2011 season, Kovalik said. Among them are ten premieres, including one of a production of Ferenc Erkel?s Bánk bán directed by the Italian Césare Lievi to take place on the 200th anniversary of the composer?s birth.

Two contemporary operas will also premiere during the season: István Márta?s Amazing Cellphone World and Gyula Fekete?s Excelsior!.

Italian operatic tradition will be represented by Verdi?s Macbeth, but the programme also includes Arrigo Boito?s Mefistofele, an adaptation of the Faust legend.

In addition to the popular Mozart operas in the repertoire, the coming season will feature his opera Ascanio in Alba, a pastorale, which he composed as a teenager.
Lovers of Wagner can look forward to two premieres: Der fliegende Holländer and Lohengrin.
The Hungarian National Ballet will feature two premieres: La fille mal gardée, a choreography by world-renowned Sir Frederick Ashton, founder of the Royal Ballet, London, and the world premi?re of A Streetcar Named Desire, choreographed by Marianna Venekei to László Dés?s music.
