Szabo will receive the Undine 2008 Award for his lifetime achievement in cinema at the 5th Undine film festival due to be held in the Austrian city.
Szabo, 70, told the Austrian daily Kurir on Monday that he appreciated the honour by a country dear to his heart and pointed out that the two countries share many similarities emanating from their common history.
He noted that the two countries gave the world Hollywood directors such as Michael Curtis, Sir Alexander Korda, Billy Wilder and Fred Zinnemann.
Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer, starred in three of Szabo's films namely; the 1981 Oscar-winning Mephisto, Colonel Redl and Hanussen.
