Karine Babajanian |
Madame Butterfly, directed by Csaba Káel and with Karine Babajanyan and Giuseppe Giacomini singing the leads, will kick off the anniversary year on January 7 and 9.
Babajanyan's international career was launched just a few years ago in Germany, but she has been asked to reprise the role of Cho Cho San at opera houses in Saarbrücken, Wiesbaden, Hannover and Frankfurt, where she received tremendous critical acclaim. In 2001, the professional journal Opernwelt named her "Singer of the Year" largely because of her exceptional Puccini performances.
Giuseppe Giacomini made his debut just as Pinkerton in Vercelli in 1966 and has since been a constant guest in the leading opera houses of Europe and America with his interpretations of heroic roles by Puccini, Verdi, Bellini and Donizetti. This season, he will sing Cavaradossi at London's Covent Garden and the Oslo National Opera in addition to Samson (Saint-Saëns) in Zurich.
The next opera on the anniversary programme will be La bohéme, directed by Ádám Horváth, slated for May 10. Turandot, directed by Balázs Kovalik and with Gyöngyi Lukács and Andrea Rost in the leads, will be performed on September 16. La fanciulla del West will be performed as a concert, together with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, on December 15.
