The Palace of Wonders beat 34 other museums in the contest, which invited museum goers to vote online for their favourite place to visit. Several thousand votes were cast in the contest.
The Munkácsy Mihály Museum in Békéscsaba won the best museum in the cultural category and the Hungarian Geography Museum in Érd won in the regional category, beating Dombóvár's museum celebrating the life of the writer István Fekete by just a few votes.
The top award comes with a purse of HUF 2 million and the runners-up will receive HUF 1.5 million apiece. The monies are to be used for promotional purposes.
The contest was sponsored by state tourism agency Magyar Turizmus.
