The festival, entitled Pécs 2010, will start in the European Parliament on October 7, then move to a tent set up in the popular Jourdan Square.
The festival has been designed to raise Pécs's profile, said MEP Gábor Harangozó. The city is not well known in Brussels, as is Istanbul, which will share the 2010 European Capital of Culture title with Pécs and the German city of Essen, he added.
Some Croatian performers will also be on the festival programme in an effort to show Pécs's neighbours to the south. The city's role as a gateway to the region was a big part of its European Capital of Culture application.
Chief Director of the Pécs European Capital of Culture programme András Mészáros said the project is progressing at a much better pace than reported in the press. The city will bring a progress report to Brussels this month, as well as an exhibition of objects from Pécs's Zsolnay Porcelain Factory and a performance by the Pécs Ballet, he said.
