Tamás Szalay, who is in charge of the Pécs2010 programme, said Pécs had established a cooperation with Essen already four or five years ago, when both cities were picked to take the 2010 European Capital of Culture title.

Hanns-Dietrich Schmidt, who oversees Essen's programme for 2010, said Essen was the flag-bearer for the title, but it was really shared by all 53 cities in Germany's Ruhr region.

Both men said representing minorities in their respective regions was an important part of programmes in 2010.

Szalay said Pécs was also focusing on its role as a gateway to the Balkans.

Director of the Hungarian state tourism agency's office in Germany Kristóf Sztojanovits spoke about the main cultural and tourism attractions in Pécs, as well as on Lake Balaton and in Budapest.
