The evening featured Beethoven's Trio Concert performed by the Pannon Philharmonics with young soloists Istvan Vardai (cello) and Barnabas Kelemen (violin) and Jeno Jando on piano.
Istvan Hiller greeted the gathering on the day marking Ferenc Kolcsey's completion of his poem "Anthem" in 1823, which later gave the words to Hungary's national anthem.
Pecs was chosen as the site of celebrations as it is the title-holder of the Cultural Capital of Europe for 2010, in a troika with Germany's Essen and Turkey's Istanbul.
