"Even though the four actors, the two instrumental soloists and the orchestra all play on the stage, the spectacle is created in the mind of the viewer by the sound," said László Göz, managing director of Budapest Music Center, which published the album. Albums published by Budapest Music Center have been nominated for MIDEM Classical Awards on four occasions, he added. Two have one the prize: an earlier album of music by Eötvös and another by Eötvös's peer and compatriot György Kurtág.
The MIDEM international music market fair is held in Cannes each year in January. The MIDEM Classical Awards recognise the previous year's outstanding classical music achievements in 14 categories. The winners are chosen by a jury of editors of Europe's most important music publications.
As I Crossed a Bridge of Dreams premiered in Hungary at the Budapest Spring Festival in 2001. An expanded version was performed as a one-act opera directed, by Ushio Amagatsu, in Lyon in 2007.
Eötvös is working on a new opera, called The Tragedy of the Devil, which will premiere at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich on February 22, 2010. The piece, based on Imre Madách's Tragedy of Man, has a libretto by the German writer and dramaturge Albert Ostermaier. The production is directed by Balázs Kovalik.
