Schnitzer won the Vinas singing competition in Barcelona in 1993 and debuted at the Vienna State Opera in the same year in the role of Agathe in The Marksman. She has since become a much sought after Wagner soprano, recently singing the role of Elisabeth in Tokyo and at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin.

The Hungarian conductor Ádám Fischer, who heads the Wagner series at the Palace of Arts, said it would be helpful to know the budget of the performances at least three years in advance for planning purposes.

?We have been lucky so far and few unexpected illnesses occurred but it is necessary to calculate with that possibility,? he said.

Fischer said the Ring cycle would not be on the programme next year, the bicentennial of Wagner?s birth, but The Mastersingers of Nuremberg would.

Fischer said he would conduct the opera L'isola disabitata at the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria, in the autumn. The festival has developed a core audience that now allows the organisers to include lesser known works on the programme, he added.

Fischer will conduct Verdi?s La Traviata at the Théatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels in December.
