Placido Domingo  will arrive in Hungary to attend the Operalia 2009 World Opera Competition he founded in 1993, which the two cities will jointly host between July 25 and August 1.

Domingo will conduct the Pannon Philharmonic in the Budapest State Opera House at the competition finals on August 1.

A week later he will perform as singer at an open-air concert in Pecs, which will also feature competition finalists.

Operalia organisers said earlier that this year will be the first time for the competition to be held in Central Europe. The international jury will comprise directors from ten famous opera houses around the world, including Paris, Madrid and Vienna. Three awards will be granted to male and female singers each and the winners will also get cash prizes of 30,000 dollars, 20,000 dollars and 10,000 dollars, respectively.
