The opening of a Chopin museum in the Ostrogski Castle in Warsaw in March will launch the series of events. A festival entitled Chopin and His Europe in August and the 16th international Chopin piano competition in October will be among the highlights.
The house in which Chopin was born, in a village on the outskirts of Warsaw, will undergo a renovation for the bicentennial year.
Former Culture Minister and head of the office organising events for the Chopin year Waldemar Dabrowski said that the celebrations would also pay homage to Polish-German cultural links in the 19th century. It was the German composer Robert Schumann who introduced Chopin to the West, starting the composer on his international career, he added.
Chopin's music was banned in Germany under the Nazis, Dabrowski noted.
