Police Recover Stolen Robin Hood Tapes

English

The master tapes, worth an estimated HUF 2 billion, were recovered from under a bush after police interviewed a suspect to whom locals led them, said Jenő Szabó, head of criminal investigations for the Pest County Police.

Szabó said the suspect had confessed to the crime and also admitted he had an accomplice: a 39-year-old man employed by Tiger Aspect, the production company from whom the tapes were stolen. A warrant has been issued for the man?s arrest.

The two thieves had demanded a ransom for the return of the tapes on August 7, the same day they disappeared, Szabó confirmed, although he declined to reveal the amount of the ransom. He did say, however, that press reports putting the sum at HUF 400 million were exaggerated.

Robin Hood producer Howard Ellis said the BBC was grateful to the Hungarian police for recovering the tapes, which will allow the series to be completed on time and broadcast as scheduled. He added that the theft had not damaged Hungary?s reputation as a venue for filmmakers, noting ?all?s well that ends well.?

Because the tapes were recovered by the police and not a private individual, the GBP 40,000 reward for their safe return has been withdrawn. However, police involved in the investigation will receive special commendations.
