Record number of Hungarians Join European Union Youth Orchestra

English

The orchestra tours each year with new members, once in summer and again in spring of the following year. The orchestra plays under the batons of world-famous conductors with renowned guest soloists in concert halls around the world. Musicians between the ages of 14 and 24 from any of the EU member states may audition for chairs in the orchestra, with no more than 140 being accepted.

Three Hungarians will join the orchestra during its 2006/2007 season: Balázs Loboczky (violin), Levente Páll (viola) and Viktor Spáth (trumpet). A further nine Hungarians made it onto the reserve list: Tamás Zétényi (cello), Johanna Dömötör (flute), Noémi Győri (flute), Mónika Varga (flute), Tamás Balla (oboe), Ágnes Farkas (oboe), Balázs Rumy (clarinet), Judit Tigyi (French horn) and István Baráth (trumpet). Those on the reserve list take over for any members of the orchestra who are unable to join the tour because of illness or other reasons. Inclusion on the reserve lists recognises a degree of musical aptitude similar to members of the orchestra. Hungarian, pianist Gábor Káli, was invited to join the orchestra?s tour without an audition.

Another Hungarian, trumpet player Gábor Vanyó, participated at the EUYO summer music school this year.

Auditions for the orchestra are organised in Hungary by the KultúrPont Office, which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage. The chief sponsors of the EUYO in Hungary are President László Sólyom and Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány. Hungarian members of EUYO?s honourary board are Minister of Culture Dr. András Bozóki, Education Minister Dr. Magyar Bálint and Foreign Minister Ferenc Somogyi.
