The renovation of the doors started in September, more than eight months after the church gathered enough donations to pay for the project's extra costs because of the strict conditions for renovations of listed buildings. The doors were renovated by the sculptor Jenő Kovács, who was born in Szeged, and the two stone pillars on the door frame were repaired by Márton Szigeti.
The renovation cost HUF 15 million, which was covered by insurance. But donations covered incidental expenses.
Bishop of Szeged-Csanád László Kiss-Rigó said the renovated doors were even more beautiful than the old ones, before they were damaged.
The doors were damaged when an unknown arsonist set fire to the nativity in front of the church on December 27, 2007.
