"Robert Capa has returned home....we have waited a long time for this," said Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány at the opening.

The curator of the exhibition Beatrix Lengyel, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány and Minister of Education and Culture István Hiller

Minister of Education and Culture István Hiller called Capa "the modern eye of the 20th century", a man whose talent and taste for adventure made him a figure for posterity. Capa can serve as an example for Hungary in the areas of education, culture and even science, he added.

National Museum director Tibor Kovács said the "master of the moment" made photographs that are not just works of art, but devices of public memory.

The exhibition of 50 famous photographs will be open to the public free of charge.

The images are part of a collection of almost a thousand photographs recently acquired by the museum from the International Center of Photography in New York with a HUF 300 million grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture. Among the photographs are Capa's best known shots as well as some never before seen images.

The exhibition will move to the Ludwig Museum on July 2.
