Roma Carnival Offers Rich Musical Programme

The Hundred-Member Gypsy Orchestra

The Hundred-Member Gypsy Orchestra will play a three-hour performance, teaming up with the Budapest Klezmer Band to play an excerpt from their 2002 composition Klezmer Suite.

 
The renowned Mato Uralo Gipsy Band will come from Serbia and the violinist Nelo Mirando from the Netherlands. The Hundred-Member Gypsy Orchestra's 83-year-old first-chair violinist Lajos Boross will have a solo performance, and Oszkár Ökrös will show his mastery of the cimbalom. Ökrös will play with the Budapest Festival Orchestra at the Edinburgh International Festival later in August.

Also on the programme are the Babos Project Special, the Váradi Roma Café, Etno Rom, the young musicians' collective Dance for Dance and András Tolnai. The Kossuth Prize-winning singer Margit Bangó will bring her students to the festival, among them a 12-year-old girl from Győr, a young man called Jancsi Rigó from Slovakia and her own daughter Mária.

 
The 18th International Roma Carnival has been organised as par of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
