Spring Awakening, based on a controversial 1891 piece by the German playwright Frank Wedekind that explored teenage sexuality, closed recently on Broadway after almost 900 performances.
"We would like to say something that goes beyond theatre, considering that the performance brings up many social problems, from abortion to class differences," said director of the Hungarian production Szilárd Somogyi.
The cast is true to life, with an average age of about 19.
Somogyi noted that a psychological test was part of tryouts for roles in the production.
"At first sight, this may seem like an easy task, but it isn't," said artistic director Gábor Miklós Kerényi about Spring Awakening.
The Hungarian premiere of Spring Awakening will take place in the first week in February, around the same time as the piece's West End premiere.
