Szeged Museum Director Sacked Because of Financial Irregularities

The assembly said it would press criminal charges in the case, which involves hundreds of millions of forints.

The museum earlier signed a HUF 1 billion contract with Hungary?s National Motorway Company to complete archaeological excavation work along the planned route of the M5 motorway. Work undertaken by a single contractor, Arch-homo, accounted for nearly half of the value of the contract. However, the company broke the law by failing to convert its company form as promised in spring of 2004, about a year after it won the tender for the contract. A subsequent inquiry found that the company had submitted bills for 500-700 man hours per employee each month, though failing to produce attendance registers. It was also discovered that the museum had paid Arch-homo HUF 320 million before autumn 2004 and a further HUF 175 million afterward, despite the fact that its contract stipulated payment in time-proportionate instalments.

Vörös, who was not present at the disciplinary hearing, said she would decide whether to appeal to the labour court about the decision after she receives it in writing.
