President László Sólyom inaugurated the new exhibition together with Minister of Culture of András Bozóki on Saturday.
The inhabitants of the eastern uplands region and the Ministry of Culture may be proud of the new section, which presents the architecture, culture and lifestyle of the people living in the region, Sólyom said at the ceremony. Regional units such as this are etched in our thinking and our hearts; indeed, they make up what is truly Hungary, he said.
The new exhibition comprises nine buildings, all typical of architecture in the region from the 18th century onward, museum director Miklós Cseri said. The buildings include a replica of a duty house from Mád, where peasants brought a tenth of their harvest to their lords, a crafts house from Gyöngyös and winemaking houses from Tokaj and Hejce.
The exhibition cost HUF 900 million to build.
The Szentendre Ethnographic Museum, or ?skanzen?, was opened in 1967. It has exhibitions presenting buildings from seven of Hungary?s regions, including now the eastern uplands region.
