The festival was named the best of 25 big European festivals, including Denmark?s Roskilde, Germany?s Hurricane, T In The Park in Scotland and Belgium?s Tomorrowland.
Sziget founder and chief organiser Károly Gerendai said he was pleased by the surprise.
?Finally there?s some good news about Hungary in the international press, as we?ve always strived to achieve?.The prize confirms for Sziget Festival visitors that it?s worth it to come to Hungary,? he said.
?This confirms for us that we?re on the right path, when ? in contrast with other big international festivals ? we not only concentrate on the musical offering, but on cultural variety, the presentation of different minority cultures, popularising civil initiatives and diverse services,? he added.
The Sziget Festival won the prize ? awarded for the third time ? based on almost 400,000 votes.
