Midnight Eye editor Tom Mes writes that "Taxidermia" blends the best moments of directors Terry Gilliam, David Lynch and Matthew Barney.
The other non-Japanese films on Mes's list include Bong Joon-Ho's "The Host," Terrence Malick's "The New World", Ken Loach's Cannes Palm d'Or winner "The Wind that Shakes the Barley", Aki Kaurismaki's "Lights in the Dusk", Pail Verhoeven's "Zwartboek", and Jan Svankmajer's "Lunacy".
"Taxidermia" was earlier named the best European film of 2006 by European-Films.Net.
