Károlyné Illés, secretary of the Békés County Folk Art Association, said Hungarian artists could learn methods of nurturing tradition and gain an international point of comparison from their foreign guests.
The convention will feature presentations on maintaining traditions in textile art as well as ways of applying centuries-old motifs to contemporary fabrics.
More than a thousand submissions are expected for the convention. The best will go on display at the Munkácsy Mihály Museum and the Munkácsy Memorial House in Békéscsaba.
Békéscsaba and the surrounding area has a unique set of textile motifs because of the mix of Hungarian, Slovak, German, Romanian and Serbian traditions, Illés said.
It is the only city in Hungary where manual and machine embroidery are taught in adult classes at the local vocational and art schools.
