Theatre Bill to Go Before Parliament in October

English

Ferenc Csák

The new bill will create the necessary conditions for predictable financing, Csák said. If it is approved, HUF 3.5bn in additional financing will be made available to theatres and dance companies, and an extra HUF 1bn will go to orchestras, music ensembles and choirs under the New Knowledge Programme.

Csák offered a recap of "priority projects" that have special access to European Union and state grants, among them the Skanzen open-air museum in Szentendre, which has been awarded HUF 2bn in support for new developments, and the Liszt Music Academy of Budapest, which will receive HUF 9.8bn in funding.

A contract on HUF 3.5bn in funding will be signed with the Museum of Fine Arts in late October or early November. The museum will use the money for its underground expansion.

A contract on HUF 10bn in support for developments in the Buda Castle is expected to be signed in early December. Contracts on HUF 1.8bn in funding for the Gödöllő Royal Castle, HUF 1.5bn for the Eszterháza Castle and HUF 1.8bn for the Edelény Castle are expected to be signed in August, Csák said.

Speaking about Hungary's Renaissance Year 2008, which marks the 550th anniversary of the coronation of King Matthias, Hungary's "Renaissance king", Csák said HUF 2.2bn of the HUF 4bn available for Renaissance Year events had been paid out to applicants. Festivals that are joining the Renaissance Year programme include the Zemplén Festival, the Debrecen Flower Carnival, the Arcus Temporum Festival of Pannonhalma, the Jewish Summer Festival, Cultural Heritage Days and the Budapest Autumn Festival.
