In the play, Srbljanovic uses the grasshopper as a metaphor for people. "All of the characters are very old, even the youngest. Everybody eats continuously and always, everywhere it is raining," says Srbljanovic.
The 37-year-old playwright is one of Serbia's most exciting and controversial - she was sued for libel by the film director Emir Kusturica, who won - personalities. Though born of Serbian parents in Stockholm, Srbljanovic has lived in Belgrade for years. She writes plays about the burning social issues with great courage and outspokenness. She has written five plays and they have been performed with great success in more than fifty countries.
Srbljanovic was the first foreign writer to win Germany's Ernst Toller Prize.
The Katona József's production of Grasshoppers was translated by Klára Potoczki and is directed by Gábor Máté. It features the actors Dénes Ujlaki, Éva Olsavszky, Vilmos Kun, Réka Pelsőczy, Ferenc Elek, Judit Rezes, Péter Takátsy, Adél Jordán, Erika Bodnár, Ferenc Lengyel and Péter Haumann.
