Works by Katinka Ágnes Kiss, Barbara Nagy and Hajnalka Tarr will be assessed by a jury in Vienna in September. The winner of the prize, which comes with a EUR 7,000 purse, will be announced in November.
German household products maker Henkel called the contest for the eighth time this year. Artists were invited to submit 5-10 works in three categories: painting and graphic works, photography and video, and installations. The artists were given more freedom for self-expression than in previous years, and they were allowed to submit works in several categories.
Kiss was picked for her paintings, Nagy for her paintings and graphic works, and Tarr for her installation and graphic works. The local jury also gave special acknowledgments to Erika Baglyas, Anikó Basa, Mátyás Boros, Diána Keller, Tamás Réthey-Prikkel, Péter Rizmayer, Ágnes Soó, Dorottya Szabó, Eszter Szabó, Orsolya Szemethy and Levente Szucs.
The Hungarian jury was chaired by Barcsay Prize-winning artist Péter Wrobel. Its members included Munkácsy Prize-winning painter János Aknay, graphic artist Miklós Bán, journalist Nóra Winkler and head of the Henkel Hungary communications department Emília Kultsár.
"We came across diverse and interesting works during the assessment process. Especially powerful were the works submitted in the painting and installation categories," Wrobel said.
The winner of the competition will also get the opportunity to organize an exhibition in his or her home country with Henkel's help. Henkel CEE's partners in the contest are KulturKontak Austria and MUMOK (Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig). For the first time, the winner will also get the opportunity to stage an independent exhibition at MUMOK.
