Hungary's Zoltan Kovacs, state secretary at the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice, said Sziget was a genuine European and at the same time Hungarian event in the middle of the Continent. It served a good example of how a country can develop its image, he added.

Olivier Alsteens, director of communications at the Belgian Prime Minister's Office, said the Sziget Festival was also an opportunity for visitors to experience Europe. "Many European values are represented here: through the performers of the festival, the culture and the fact that visitors can experience in practice that there are no borders," he added.

The tree of the EU trio has been created jointly by Spanish, Belgian and Hungarian artists. Festival-goers can place messages on the tree and these will appear in digital form on the tree's facebook page.

The current trio of EU presidencies runs until the middle of 2011. Hungary will take over the six-month term from Belgium on January 1, 2011.
