Turkey, Talking Books and Crime Stories Share Spotlight in Frankfurt

Though the fair officially starts on Wednesday, a gala event - with the participation of such literary greats as Paolo Coelho, Günter Grass and Orhan Pamuk, the Turkish writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2006 and is representing his country as the guest of honour in Frankfurt - took place on Tuesday.

Jürgen Boos, the fair's director, said 7,373 exhibitors from about a hundred countries - including Hungary - are participating at the festival. The biggest exhibitor at the fair is Germany, followed by Great Britain and the United States. Many exhibitors from China, which will be the guest of honour at next year's fair, also have stands.

"Electronic books" have a high profile at this year's fair, understandably so: of all of the books being presented in Frankfurt, digital books and talking books account for some 30 percent.

Sharing the spotlight with Turkey and electronic books are crime stories. Alone among German exhibitors, crime stories make up almost a third of the titles on display.
