Hungarian Minister of Education and Culture István Hiller hosted Czech Minister of Culture Václav Riedlbauch, state secretary at the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage Monika Smolen and state secretary at the Slovak Ministry of Culture Augustin Jozef Lang.
The parties signed a 23-point agreement on current and future tasks at the end of the meeting.
Hiller said culture should remain a national issue among European Union members, but added that the EU's cultural spending had to be improved during the next seven-year budget period in 2014-2020.
"We agreed that it is necessary to prepare in good time for the EU's fiscal planning period of 2014-2020. We believe it is important to ensure strong representation of education, culture and science, propose an outstanding role for these areas, and represent this position in terms of financing in Brussels," Hiller said.
Hiller noted that the Pécs, in Hungary, is a 2010 European Capital of Culture and that its experiences could be shared with aspiring culture capitals in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland.
Lang said that when Slovakia takes over the rotating EU presidency from Hungary in the second half of next year, there will need to be a proper celebration of the 20th anniversary the establishment of the V4.
