In an area near the village of Tiszaroff, the workers discovered 63 valuable silver coins and one gold one in extraordinarily good condition. The coins reveal much about their former owner?s economic status as well as the troubled times he lived in.
Uncovered with the coins was a large amount of musket shot, suggesting the money was lost during György Rákóczi I?s campaign against the Austrians in 1644-1645.
It could not be determined in what the coins were carried: a canvas or leather purse would have long since decayed. But it is certain that all of the coins have been recovered: the area where the coins were found has been gone over with the most modern equipment.
The coins will soon go on display to the public at the Damjanich János Museum in Szolnok, after they are restored and catalogued.
