The exhibition was organised by György Hegedüs, who heads the local photography club and has written a book about Gyenes.

He said the Gyenes?s heart was ?half Mediterranean, half Hungarian?, adding that the photographer had insisted that all articles or interviews with him start with his own beginnings: ?born in Kaposvár, Hungary?.

Gyenes bequeathed 124 of his photographs ? portraits of some of the most important personalities of the 20th century ? to the city of Kaposvár in the early 1990s. The exhibition will show 121 of these.

Gyenes emigrated to Madrid in 1940 and became the official photographer of the Spanish royal family. He was also made a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts ? the only photographer ever to be inducted.

An interesting addition to the show will be a photograph of the artist József Rippl-Rónai, also born in Kaposvár, on his death bed from the collection of the Somogy County Museum.

The exhibition can be seen until October 27.
