Zoltai said the festival had gained an international profile over the past decade and a half, and it would again present a lineup of well known Hungarian and foreign performers.

He said the festival-goers would enjoy the same high level of quality as in earlier years in spite of a significant reduction in state support.

Zoltai said the festival stands up for honouring human rights with the language of art. We believe Hungarian Jews are part of the country?s national history and have helped shape its fate, we believe that Hungary is part of Europe, that Europe which requires everybody to respect human rights, he added.

The Liszt Chamber Orchestra performed a concert in the Dohány Street Synagogue on Sunday evening. They were joined by the Hungarian violinists Ágnes Pusker and Júlia Pusker as well as the eight-year-old Israeli pianist Yoav Levanon.
