Žagar (H)

Zagar, founded in 2001, is the headliner group of the Hungarian electronic music scene. Their sound is based on contemporary electronic music, hip-hop, jazz
and indie-rock adding with experimental scratches by DJ Bootsie. The
result is heavy beats, atmospheric mood and sound clips from the
psychedelic era of the late 60´s. Their debut album, the Local
Broadcast was released in 2002 in Hungary (UGAR/UCMG) and in Austria
(Universal Jazz) now it is distributed in world wide by the Berlin
based MConnexxion. This album was selected for the chart of the 50
all time's most important Hungarian records by the music magazine WAN2.

Their concerts are accompanied by conceptual projection combining Russian avant-garde with the movies of modern times, Hungarian surrealist films with today?s video culture. Presently they are working on their new studio album which will be published in 2007. At Trafó they will play their calmer, more subtle pieces, which means that there will be more improvisation. Get ready for unheard tunes and rhythms!

We can hardly talk about Nu Jazz and Future Jazz without mentioning the name of Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft. At the beginning of the 90s he played on the records of ECM label with Jan Garbarek, Arild Andersen, Terje Rypdal and Sidesel Endresen. Later he discovered the progressivism lying in electronic dance music and turned away from Nordic jazz tradition. In 1995 he founded his own record company, Jazzland Records and published his first album entitled New Conception of Jazz. The record not only received a Grammy award and had a great critical acclaim surrounding it, but it also became a reference for the musicians working with similar genres.
His next record, Moving was described by BBC Jazz as the ?new world order of jazz?, and really: it brought about radical novelties compared to his first album. As a critic put it: ?Bugge stands in groove dance hall with one foot, and in the stratospheres with the other.? Wild experimentalism, thumping drum and bass and trip hop, dj-sounds, repetitive monotony and psychedelics characterize his music. The first and foremost thing that distinguishes Wesseltoft?s music from other musicians combining jazz and electronics is that his band is way better in live improvisations than other representatives of the genre. It is enough to have a look at Wesseltoft?s tour dates: besides his own concerts he plays with John Scofield and Joshua Redman.
?There is no musician or artist in the world that is not inspired by others. However, the important thing is to let inspiration develop, to work towards finding a unique means of personal expression. This is what I believe and is what I have always tried to achieve ... to find my own thing, my own voice. I dont want to be another carbon copy of any great musician, past or present: I don't see the point of that. There have been so many good things done before, but one must find ones own sound.? / Bugge Wesseltoft/
On Bugge Wesseltoft:
"A full, epic scale jazz assault with a stringent left field house attitude, stunning to the verge of addiction, drifting along like tranquility given wings. Lovers of music, not scenes, need this.?
