1956 Revolution is Thread for Story in Austrian Book

English

One of the freedoms the author considers in the book is that of the great footballer Ferenc Puskás, the captain of the Hungarian team, who decided not to return to Hungary after the 1956 Revolution was crushed. The decision earned him a ban on playing for a year and a half by the Hungarian Football Association. Only after the ban ended was he able to play again, for Real Madrid.

At the centre of story is the Földes family ? father István, mother Etelka and son Laci ? who flee as refugees of 1956 to Austria. There the family accommodates to Austrian society, though Etelka, who speaks fluent German, finds work as a secretary, while István works odd jobs.

The story jumps between 1956, the 1960s and 2008, when Laci, or rather the adult László, meets a lawyer named Valentin at a petrol station. It is here the story starts and the past of the two men?s families unwinds.
