The Tamási Áron Theatre?s most important goal over the past two decades has been to popularise contemporary theatre, director László Boscsárdi told regional Hungarian language newspaper Krónika. As a result, the city?s residents can welcome contemporary productions of the highest degree, he added.

This year?s biennale, the second, will feature performances by troupes from Germany, Egypt, Lithuania, Poland, Italy and Hungary, as well as from Hungarian theatre companies in Cluj Napoca and Timisoara. The Act Theatre and Bulandra Theatre from Bucharest are also on the programme.

The biennale boasts workshops, talks with theatre professionals, exhibitions and a screening of German director Wim Wenders? documentary about the late dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch.

At the first Reflex International Theatre Biennale in 2009, eight troupes from five countries brought productions. Among the highlights was a performance of Oresteia by Berlin?s Deutsches Theatre directed by Michael Thalheimer.
