The U.S. Embassy-sponsored camp, called "Roma and Friends" brings together 42 young people between the ages of 12 and 14, as well as eight teachers, from all over Hungary to participate in activities designed to promote inter-ethnic understanding, empathy and tolerance, the U.S. Embassy said on its website. Teachers also receive instruction in developing tolerance and conflict resolution skills.
Foley was accompanied to the camp by the Hungarian Prime Minister's Roma Commissioner and Member of Parliament, László Teleki and Zoltán Balog, the Chairman of the Parliament's Human Rights Committee.
Cultural assistant at the U.S. Embassy Gergő Sántha said the programme at the week-long camp offered an opportunity to Roma and non-Roma youth and their teachers to learn about the diversity of American culture and acquire inter-cultural experiences.
