The short composition, entitled Albumblatt, was discovered by the British conductor Christopher Hogwood when he was researching manuscripts in the United States.
It is thought that the piece was written by Brahms in 1853, when he was 20 years old.
Brahms revisited the theme of the piece twelve years later in the second movement of his Horn Trio op. 40.
