Annunciation of Salkaházi Beatification Slated For September 17

English

Pope Benedict XVI signed on April 28, 2006 the decree of beatification for Salkaházi, which shows she died as a martyr. Salkaházi and the Jews she was hiding were murdered by Nazis in December 1944, after an informer reported them.

Salkaházi ?offers us true Catholic examples to be followed?, Erdő said. ?During a year when the nation is being spiritually recharged, this is perhaps the most beautiful gift from the Pope to the Hungarian church and perhaps Hungarian society.?

A plaque commemorating Salkaházi?s sacrifice can be found on the bridgehead on the Pest side of the Szabadság Bridge. A ceremony is held at the site every December 27, the day Salkaházi was killed.

The annunciation of Salkaházi?s beatification will be the first to take place in Hungary since 1083, when Saint Stephen, his son Saint Imre, and Imre?s mentor Saint Gellért were beatified.
