English

The exhibition, entitled ?Memento 56?, features 80 photographs from the museum?s archives showing damages to the museum and its collection during the anti-Soviet revolt.

Most of the images were taken by Judit Kárász, the museum?s photographer at the time. Kárász systematically documented damages both to the interior and exterior of the building, including the shot-up cupola, the shattered glass ceiling over the main hall, the broken artifacts on display at the time and the museum?s ransacked library.

Other pictures were taken by Gézá Fehérvári, also one of the museum?s staff at the time. Fehérvári documented the tanks and other military vehicles in the street in front of the museum, as well as some of the surprised expressions on the faces of people on the street. He also took some shots of the surrounding buildings, such as the shell-pocked walls of the residential buildings opposite the museum.

In addition to the photographs, the exhibition will feature works of art by Ildikó Polgár and Tamás Ortutay created in memory of the 1956 Revolution.

The exhibition is open from October 20 until 29. It is in the main hall of the museum, which is located at Üllői út 33-37, near the Ferenc körút underground station. The museum is open from 10:00 until 18:00.
