Ars Hungarica Features in Sibiu Culture Capital Programme

Ars Hungarica, a programme within a programme featuring Hungarian performers and artists, will take place between August 19 and 26, said Ars Hungarica spokeswoman Tünde Serfőző.

 
The organisers have invited more than 700 artists to participate at in Ars Hungarica, which will feature exhibitions, book signings, theatre productions, folk dance performances, opera, classical, pop and jazz performances. In addition to performers from Hungary, Hungarians living in Transylvania, Switzerland and Germany will also be on the bill.
 
Performers will include the Budapest Baroque Ensemble, the folk singer Márta Sebestyén, the actor Károly Eperjes, cimbalom master Kálmán Balogh, the Shake Quartet, the organists Mónika Kecskés and László Deák, the Misztrál Ensemble, the rock group Kampec Dolores, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble and the pop group Neoton Família.
 
The production of István the King, by Ferenc Novák and starring Gyula Vikidál and Miklós Varga, will take place in the local stadium on August 23. Thousands are expected to see the performance.
 
Each day of the eight-day event will be dedicated to a personality with connections to Sibiu who made contributions to Hungarian culture. Among them are the sculptor Miklós Borsos, who created the Zero Kilometre Marker near Budapest's Chain Bridge and was born in Sibiu; the writer József Nyírő, who was completed his service as a priest in Sibiu; the painter Miklós Barabás, who vacationed in Sibiu; and the architect and writer Károly Kós, who spent his childhood in Sibiu. Other personalities who will be acknowledged in the Ars Hungarica programme are the composer and collector of folk music Béla Bartók, the poet Sándor Petőfi and the textile artist Mária Bodor.
