State Secretary for Culture Géza Szőcs announced the results of a tender by called by the National Resources Ministry at the Puskin cinema in Budapest on Saturday.

The Puskin and Toldi cinemas in Budapest, the House of the Arts in Miskolc, the Agora-Savaria cinema in Szombathely, the City Cinema of Tapolca and the Uránia Dinema in Cegléd each received a 12.5 million forint grant. The local arthouse cinema in Gödöllő received 11.7 million forints, the P?Art cinema in Szentendre received 10.6 million forints, and the Agora-Savaria cinema in Szombathely was awarded 10.6 million forints.

Applications for another 100 million forints in funding for the same purpose will be called for next year.

Ten of Hungary?s 44 arthouse cinemas were forced to close last year as money ran out. While multiplexes have seen a decline in box office receipts just as arthouse cinemas, they have bridged the gap with 3D films and are set to switch over to digital projection technology from the start of 2012.

All 13 of the applicants for the funding from the National Resources Ministry to support investments to adopt digital projection technology were accepted.
