Bartók Exhibition Opens In Paris

English

The exhibition consists of materials from the collection of the Music Studies Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Science. It shows the most important events of Bartók?s life as reflected in photographs, letters, notes, music and other documents.

The exhibition is part of the fifth annual Paris Foreign Cultures Week, from September 25 to October 1. Thirty-three foreign cultural institutions in Paris are participating in this year?s event, which focuses on 20th century and contemporary artists.

While the Hungarian Institute celebrates Bartók, Ireland?s cultural institute in Paris will mark the life of Samuel Beckett and Denmark?s will pay tribute to Lars von Trier. Some cultural institutes have dedicated the week to lesser-known figures, such as Maire Gullichsen, a patron of the Finnish arts, and Méret Oppenheim, the Swiss expressionist.

Between 100,000 and 150,000 visitors are expected at exhibitions, concerts, theatre productions, films and conferences during Foreign Cultures Week, which is supported by the French culture ministry and the Paris local council.

The Bartók exhibition at the Hungarian Culture Institute in Paris can be seen until October 7. On September 28, a screening of ?Roots?, István Gaál?s 2002 film about Bartók, will be shown.
