The award, presented on the basis of opinions of critics and audiences, was won by the BFO in 1997, when it played the festival for the first time, as well.

The BFO played four concerts at this year's festival, between August 23 and 26. Two of the concerts, in Usher Hall, featured the entire orchestra performing works by Liszt, Sarasate, Brahms, Bartók and Dvorák together with József Lendvay on violin and the Netherlands Youth Choir. Chamber works by Matthias Seiber, Dohnányi, Hummel, Enescu and Bartók were on the programme of the other concerts, held in Queen's Hall.

The Herald presented another Herald Golden Angel Award for a Prokofiev series by Valery Giergiev at this year's Edinburgh Festival.
