Bluebeard's Castle

Bluebeard was sung by Falk Struckman and Judith by Michelle Deyoung. The piece was directed by the young Dutchman Johan Simons. Péter Eötvös conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for the performance.

The one-act opera was followed by a performance of Bartók's Four Pieces for Orchestra op. 12, Sz 51 and Cantata profana - The Nine Enchanted Stags for tenor, baritone, double chorus and orchestra, Sz 94.

Eötvös praised the orchestra and the chorus, who learned the cantata, sung in Hungarian, by heart. He also said the director Simons was someone "we are likely to hear about in the future".

The Bartók concert will be repeated three more times at the Salzburg Festival.
